Oooh! Shiny

Oooh! Shiny is about a crow getting what he deserves. A shiny!

Creator: Angela Boyle

Publication Date: 2011

Format: BW, 14 pages , 4.25 inches tall x 7 inches wide, Japanese stab binding with black thread

Printed as linoleum block prints on mulberry paper. The best pieces were scanned and turned into a computer-printed copy. The original pieces were bound into eight, special, hard-cover editions.

Angela spent the summer of 2011 carving the linoleum blocks and driving all the way to Bellingham (from Seattle) to press the prints every Saturday. All the text in the comic is hand-written on each copy of the original.

This is the colophon in the back of the special editions.

Of course, before carving all those linoleum blocks, Angela drew some sketches of crows to practice their shape. They are pretty cute. The crows. Not the sketches.

Studies

Pencils to get what the crows really look like. Inks to get their shapes as they would look as block prints. Angela just used a sharpie pen.

Creation

Angela did this nearly every Saturday for the summer of 2011. She could only print 8 copies of about 3 or 4 pages each day.

Binding

Binding the books was probably fastest. Both the computer printed copies and the special editions of the original are bound using traditional stab binding.
